Also known as the President’s House, the MacLean House was constructed to serve as the residence for the president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). Notably, John Witherspoon, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, lived here during his tenure as college president. The house also has connections to George Washington, who occupied it during the Battle of Princeton in January 1777 and again in 1783 when Congress met in nearby Nassau Hall. Today, it serves as the home of the Alumni Association of Princeton University and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
