Quaker Women in Mercer County

We were Quaker women living in what is now Mercer County, New Jersey, during the time of the American Revolution. Bound by our faith, we refused to take up arms or swear loyalty to either side, but that did not mean we stood idle.
While battles broke out around us—from Trenton to Princeton—we stayed committed to peace, offering care to the wounded no matter their uniform. We opened our homes, dressed wounds, and shared food with those in need. In places like Stony Brook, we gathered at the Meeting House, holding on to our values even as war tested them.
Some of us, like Margaret Hill Morris just downriver in Burlington, kept detailed records of what we saw. Others simply lived the truth in silence, serving community above conflict. We did not seek glory, but we held firm. And in doing so, we helped hold our towns together.
